White Hominy & Black Bean Chili

I made chili. This is my chili, a modern culinary adventure. This is not your mom’s chili. I had to use my favorite ingreidents, I guess that’d be my own unique twist. There are many recipes for chili available online. The amounts of ingredients are definitely not unique but my ingredient and flavor combinations are completely original, to the best of my knowledge.

This recipe uses a few unique ingredients that not all people will know. That’s fine. I’ve got you covered. I’m going to explain it all. Well, perhaps the internet will. You will need TVP and white hominy. TVP is textured vegetable protein which is defatted soy and is high in fiber and protein. White hominy is corn that has been treated with alkali which causes it to puff up. These things can be confusing so you can find more information here and here. This chili is so easy. Terrifyingly easy.

It doesn't look pretty but it tastes pretty.

What you need

  • 2 cups hominy
  • 1 cup TVP
  • 15 oz black beans
  • 15 oz diced tomatoes
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 4 oz diced jalapenos
  • 1 cup vegetarian vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, diced
  • 1/2 large white onion, chopped
  • 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • avocado, as garnish

Start cooking

Canned ingredients are easiest but not healthiest. I used all canned vegetables but I should have used preprepared beans and vegetables and jarred tomato sauce. I do my best to avoid canned goods but I’m a hypocrite sometimes. That’s a very important life lesson. I learned it, did you?

Here’s the delicious part. Put all of the ingredients into a pot and boil away on medium-low heat until the onions are cooked and the consistency is…chili-esque. In non-chili terms that’s 30 minutes but trust me you’ll know when it’s done.

This is not a spicy chili. If you want to make it spicy you’ve got to add some dried chipotle peppers. Other options would be to serve it with hot sauce or add spicier chili powder.

You can kind of see a hominy in there. I tried.

Nutrition facts

This is my best guess at nutrition facts for this recipe. I am not an expert and I make no claim that these facts are 100% accurate. I think they’re pretty close though. These facts do not include the avocado.

Serving suggestions

I served this chili with avocado on top. I used a fourth of a whole avocado to be exact. It goes well with Ezekiel bread or brown rice. The chili was totally scrumptious. My recipe guineapig boyfriend liked it. When we ate this chili we paired it with a nice (cheap) malbec! Malbec is the perfect wine for this dish. Also, I really just love it. Have a wonderful week!!!
